Thoughts

I first met Ron (or "EarlierRon" as we called him) at CVSS in 2014 when I started volunteering. We shared the same mischievous humour, and Ron had a knack of bringing this humour to the most mundane situations. Ron was a extremely capable sailor/ all rounder, and helped teach me the ropes, but at the same time, Ron never took life too seriously, which hugely contributed to his endearing and infectious personality. He had a rare gift of being able to get on with people of all ages; the young as well as the not so young. Ron was a genuinely lovely man, and it has been a privilege to have know him, even if it was only for a relatively short period of time. He will be greatly missed by all of his colleagues, and sailors at CVSS. Sincere condolences to Ron's family on their loss. Nigel.

The one thing that I will always remember Ron for is the fact that there was never a dull moment once he had arrived. We first met as volunteers down at Bury Lake in the Aquadrome, Rickmansworth, I was already a member of the CVSS (sailing for people with disabilities) and Ron was one of our new volunteers, that was either 2011 or 2012. We soon knew that we had found a good guy because he was always ready to accept whatever duty he was asked to do. He was asked to do the various courses and soon was able to take on safety boat duties, he was as good on the water as he was on the shore as he had a way of making people feel welcome and certainly made them laugh at times. After losing my partner at the end of 2012, I was always grateful to Ron on a Saturday morning when he would pick me up on route to the lake, then when we got back he would often come in for a cuppa and sometimes stayed for a meal, it was good to have his company. He was always offering me his help should I ever need it. Sadly the Parkinson’s started to slow him up a bit and he did speak of not coming to the lake anymore but we all said, never mind how late you may arrive, do keep coming as we wanted to see him, and that is what he did right up until the end of 2019 season, after which came the pandemic and Ron needing more nursing help. Had it not have been for COVID he would have had many visitors, but thankfully with the use of FaceTime and the help of his nurses I was able to have a chat with him. As I have of other old friends, I will always have a photo of him around. Thank you Ron for your kind friendship. Cheers Norm
